Changes to Thai varsity admission system

Posted on Monday, May 05 @ 16:58:37 ICT Education

The central university admission scoring system will be altered in 2010 to give the cumulative grade point average (GPAX) and the Ordinary National Educational Test (O-Net) results an equal 50% weighting as the aptitude test. The Council of University Rectors met in Ubon Ratchathani on Saturday to review the weighting for 2010.

The council agreed to increase the weighting for the GPAX and O-Net results for eight core subjects to 50%. Applicants' individual aptitude test in basic subjects, including mathematics, science, engineering and architecture, would make up the rest of the 50% score.

(...) The council also agreed that the National Institute of Educational Testing Services (Niets) should be responsible for organising all the future tests.

Also discussed were problems related to the quality of university graduates being produced.

Monthon Sa-nguansermsri, rector of Naresuan University and chair of the council, said a rush by universities to offer courses has affected the quality of university education.

To tackle the problem effectively, universities are now required to employ only specialised instructors when they introduce new courses. Quality of graduates would also be closely monitored and assessed.
