Dengue fever warning for Thailand | Posted on Thursday, March 27 @ 15:26:21 ICT
Visitors to South-East Asia currently run an increased risk of contracting dengue fever. Although the rainy season is not due to start until May, several mosquitoes are already active and carrying infectious diseases, warns the Dusseldorf-based Centre for Travel Medicine (CRM). Thailand and Indonesia have already seen 41 fatalities caused by dengue fever and an additional 5171 people have contracted the disease. The disease is transmitted by mosquito bites that are active during the day. Travellers should invest in good mosquito protection and contact their doctor or pharmacist about all prevention possibilities, advises the CRM. Dengue fever manifests itself two to seven days after infection with flu-like symptoms, including fever, severe headaches and pains in the extremities as well as pressure behind the eyes. The symptoms last about a week. If a second infection is contracted, internal bleeding or shock can set in. DPA
